白宫出面调停俄乌战争
Today Washington is at the center of the Russia–Ukraine conflict. President Donald Trump is hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy alongside a group of European leaders including the U.K.’s Keir Starmer, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Finland’s Alexander Stubb, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. This gathering, quickly dubbed the “Coalition of the Willing,” is focused on building a framework for peace and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
One of the key topics on the table is how to provide Ukraine with firm security protections, possibly similar to NATO’s Article 5 commitment, though full NATO membership remains off the table for now. Trump, fresh from talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, has signaled that a ceasefire might not be a necessary condition to begin negotiations. That position contrasts with Zelenskyy and several European leaders, who maintain that Russia must halt hostilities before meaningful diplomacy can begin.
Despite these differences, Trump said the United States will stand with Europe in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. Zelenskyy praised the message as a strong signal and reiterated that Ukraine is open to elections in the future, but only once it is safe and the war has ended. There is also talk of a potential trilateral summit involving Trump, Zelenskyy, and Putin, though details remain uncertain.
For now, the European leaders are united in pressing for Ukraine’s sovereignty and urging Russia to stop its attacks. The mood in Washington reflects both hope and caution: a rare opportunity for progress, but one overshadowed by divisions over how to reach it. What’s clear is that today’s meetings mark one of the most consequential moments in the search for peace since the war began.
